Although the number of people living in extreme poverty in the world has nearly halved since 1990, 836 million people on the planet, according to 2015 data, and half a million in Serbia, according to 2017 data, are still living on the brink of sustaining life and unable to meet basic existential needs.
The at-risk-of-poverty rate, which refers to people who are not statistically poor but are at risk of deprivation, in 2017 in the EU was 16.9%, while in Serbia in 2018. it was 24,3%.
The 2030 Agenda provides for extreme poverty to be eradicated, halving the number of people living in any form of poverty and reducing the poverty risk of people belonging to the most vulnerable groups. This requires social assistance to be more responsibly distributed, more accessible and more open to recognize the needs of those who have been left out.
